And work for NBC during SCORE Las Vegas Terrible's Cup II
Herbst brothers, NASCAR’s R. Gordon, Pflueger, B.J. Baldwin, Coyne,
Leading SCORE Trophy-Trucks to LVMS Dirt Track
LAS VEGAS - Cameron Steele wiill combine his work and pleasure next weekend as the NBC sports reporter will be attempting to win four classes at the SCORE Las Vegas Terrible’s Cup II as well as work for NBC at an open-wheel race in San Jose, Calif. Steele will join the best of SCORE Desert Racing in a special two-day race next Friday and Saturday on a 1.5 man-made ‘chunk of Baja’ course on the Dirt Track at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
The green flag will drop at 7 p.m. each for the eight SCORE car and truck classes that normally roam the desert in Southern Nevada and Mexico for this unique special event that brings the world’s best desert racers into a fan-friendly environment where nearly the entire race course can be seen from the grandstands.
With eight of the SCORE Desert racing classes split into five different groups, racing will begin at 7 p.m. each night at LVMS and both nights will conclude with elaborate Terrible’s Fireworks Shows.
Racing in Las Vegas will be the marquee SCORE Trophy-Trucks and the unlimited SCORE Class 1 open-wheel desert race cars along with special groups for open-wheelers in Class 1-2/1600 and Class 10, SCORE Lite along with the mini-trucks of Class 7, Class 7S, and Class 7SX. The event will have a $60,000 cash purse plus contingency postings.
As a prelude to the two days of racing, the SCORE Las Vegas Pit Stop at Fremont Street Experience will be held on Thursday, July 27. At the SCORE Pit Stop, starting at 6 p.m., will be a vehicle display and driver autograph session followed by the $10,000 Terrible’s Pit Crew Challenge for SCORE Trophy-Trucks, under the multi-million dollar canopy on Fremont Street.
From Steele, Ed and Tim Herbst, NASCAR’s Robby Gordon, Alan Pflueger, B.J. Baldwin and Marty Coyne, the SCORE Trophy-Truck field will feature 15 of the high-tech, 800-horsepower, unlimited production trucks that have spent the last 12-plus years rumbling around rugged desert race courses in the Southwestern U.S. and Baja California, Mexico.
A regular in the SCORE Desert Series, Steele, 37, of San Clemente, Calif., will compete in the marquee SCORE Trophy-Truck division along with Class 1-2/1600, Class 7SX and SCORE Lite. After Friday night’s action he will fly to San Jose for his pit reporter duties during qualifying for NBC’s telecast of the Champ Car World Series event. After finishing the SCORE race Saturday night, Steele will fly back to San Jose to be part of NBC’s live coverage on Sunday of the open-wheel race.
If all of the above doesn't keep him busy enough, Steele will also do some guest announcing during this SCORE race.
“I truly love SCORE desert racing and our Desert Assassins racing team,” said Steele, whose wife Heidi, a regular in the SCORE Desert Series Class 7SX, will drive their Ford Ranger on Saturday night after Steele drives Friday. “I also enjoy my work announcing action sports and the Champ Cars, and this weekend I get to enjoy my passion and my work. Our Desert Assassins team has six entries and we are looking to pull off the ‘double hat trick’ in Las Vegas.”
Currently sixth in SCORE Trophy-Truck point standings in the 2006 SCORE Desert Series, Steele will be racing his Desert Assassins Ford F-150 in Las Vegas and in SCORE Lite, where he is fifth in the current season standings, will be behind the wheel of his VW-powered Desert Assassins open-wheel desert race car.
Las Vegas’ Ed and Tim Herbst, are the all-time winningest team in SCORE Trophy-Truck history. Splitting the driving time in their No. 19 Terrible Herbst Motorsports Ford F-150, Ed, 45, and Tim, 43, have 11 career wins in SCORE Trophy-Truck, and four of the 12 season championships (1999, 2000, 2002, 2003).
NASCAR team owner/driver Robby Gordon, Charlotte, N.C., will spend his weekend off from the Nextel Cup series by returning to his racing roots by driving the No. 83 Team Gordon Chevy CK1500 SCORE Trophy-Truck in Las Vegas. Gordon, the 1996 SCORE Trophy-Truck season point champion, annually races in both the Tecate SCORE Baja 500 (which he was the overall winner of in 2005) and in the Tecate SCORE Baja 1000 (which he has won four times). Gordon has five career SCORE Trophy-Truck race wins.
Hawaii’s popular Alan Pflueger, who has two career SCORE Trophy-Truck race wins, has entered his No. 28 Pflueger Racing Chevy Silverado in this event for the first time.
Las Vegas’ B.J. Baldwin, who won this year’s season-opening SCORE Laughlin Desert Challenge, was second in the Tecate SCORE San Felipe 250 and fourth in the Tecate SCORE Baja 500, is the current SCORE Trophy-Truck and Overall point leader in the 2006 SCORE Desert Series in his No. 97 Baldwin Racing Chevy Silverado.
Marty Coyne, El Centro, Calif., returns to the site of his first career SCORE Trophy-Truck race win and he will be looking to put his No. 5 Coyne Motorsports Ford F-150 back into the winner’s circle for his second victory at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
With each paid admission will also come one coupon for the free drawing for the SCORE Terrible’s Fan Appreciation give-a-way. A new showroom Dodge Dakota Truck, donated by Terrible’s, will be the grand prize given away on Saturday night (July 29) at LVMS. Friday night drawing prizes, also courtesy of Terrible’s, will include free gas for a year, free car washes for a year, free oil changes for a year and a Mexican cruise for two.
With co-title sponsorship from Las Vegas Events and Terrible’s Convenience Stores, the SCORE Las Vegas Terrible’s Cup I will feature two nights of racing on the LVMS Dirt Track. Racing will be on a purpose-built race track with limited pavement and man-made dirt simulations of the rugged desert terrain.
