Round 2 of six-race 2006 SCORE Desert Series
March 10-11—San Felipe, Baja California, Mexico
Post-Race Quotes
PRO CARS AND TRUCKS
SCORE TROPHY-TRUCK
38 Garron Cadiente
We had a very good today, with no problems at all. The course was really,
really rough. We knew where to go, everybody was at the whole race, we knew where
to go fast or slow; the real deal was on the new guy. There was speculation
on the new guy. Today, we proved ourselves and we got the good guys. It was
only our third SCORE race, we only started racing in April of last year.
97 BJ Baldwin
I feel great, I’m not tired at all. We had one flat tire at mile 40. We added
oil about 10 miles ago. There was some rain and it made it slippery in some
areas. I’m a little disappointed that we didn’t win our class and the
overall, but second in SCORE Trophy-Truck in this race is pretty darn good. It was
only the second race in our new Chevy Silverado and we have two podiums—we won
the SCORE Laughlin Desert Challenge and today we got second in the SCORE San
Felipe 250.
19 Ed Herbst
Co-driver:Tim Herbst.
The course was rough, very challenging. I did the second half of the race and
Ed drove the first. We had a tough day. I had two flats, one of the wheels
was not well tightened, it came off and destroyed the hub causing a lot of down
time.

28 Alan Pflueger
Co-driver: John Hoffman.
Tough day .We had suspension trouble at the beginning. Had to change a tranny
about half of the race, but this guys never quit they had so hard road stop,
but they said go on, and Allan told me to go and play for a little while. We
are happy with this team. Alan started, I jumped in on mile 130. The road was
very slick and gnarly, hard to hang in, too hard to see.
839 Juan Carlos López (switched from Class 8 on race morning by SCORE Tech)
We had some suspension problems but we fixed them. The road was hard. In San
Matías we had rain and it was slippery. We saw two accidents.
CLASS 1
102 Troy Herbst
I stayed in the hunt for the first half of the race before giving the car to
Larry and he drove phenomenally well like always and closed the deal for us
in Class 1. We’re a little bummed we didn’t complete our trifecta and win the
overall to go along with our overalls in the SCORE Baja 500 and the SCORE
Baja 1000. This was a very good win though, and definitely puts us back in the
Class 1 championship points race for the season.
Co-driver: Larry Roeseler
Gary and Mark Weyhrich weren’t far behind us, he was ahead 30 seconds on
corrected time at the 200 mile marker. It was an “E ticket ride” from there. I
lined up the road, there were thousands of fans alongside the course and we
floored it down the middle of the course to get it done! We didn’t have flat tire,
those BFG tires are the best. There were some extreme off conditions on the
course, but it was very exciting. We passed a lot of vehicles along the way and
the rain on parts of the course helped keep the dust down.
CLASS 1-2/1600
1631 Brian Burgess
Co-driver: Daniel Folts
I started my part of the race and was behind Rodrigo Ampudia (1624) in my
class and now I am ahead of him. Brian Burgess started and drove to mile 126. I
jumped in with no problems either. It was a perfect day. The climate was cold
at Matomi and it was rainy. We didn’t stop once, it was a great day.
CLASS 3
300 Donald Moss
Co-driver: Ken Moss.
We didn’t have problems really. It was pretty rough compared it to the other
ones we’ve run here. Matomi wash was very wet and slippery. Don drove to mile
130 and from there I came to the finish line and we won our class in the
SCORE San Felipe 250 for the fifth straight year.
CLASS 5
503 Pietro Brassea
Co-driver:José López
We had a flat and a roll over, but we finished and even won our class. There
was hot weather, rain, a little bit of everything. I feel tired, but many
people cheered us. We are from Mexicali. Piettro Brassea started until race mile
130, and then I took the car the rest of the way.
CLASS 5/1600
576 Ernesto Arambula
We came in first place and I’m very tired. It haven’t seen in such a
difficult course. It was cold sometimes, and we got lots of water. The sand was very
wet, so it was hard to drive. But this is a first place for Ensenada once
again. Octavio Zamora and Hector Ramos Jr. helped me, they were my co-pilots.
CLASS 7
703 Victor Herrera, Jr.
Victor gave me the car at mile 128 in first place, I had a flat and the
people helped us out. Some parts of the road were very wet and it seemed as we were
skating. Near the finish, the a-arm broke, we changed it and we arrived. A
good thing is to be able to ride together with my dad and represent Mexicans.
703 Co-driver Victor Herrera.
It was a very exciting race, very rough, specially the first part very
difficult, I think almost all the cars in our class got stuck at some point, it’s
been the worst of the ten times I have driven this race, but this made it very
interesting. When we started it was raining almost all the time so we ended
full of mud. We are happy because we finally got first place in the SCORE San
Felipe 250.
CLASS 7SX
759 John Holmes
I liked the rain. It made it harder, the harder the better. I love Mexico and
its people. I didn’t see accidents but there a lot of broken cars out there,
but I got first place.
CLASS 8
803 Nick Vanderwey
Awesome race, ran clean the whole day. My brother Larry gave me the truck at
mile 120, half way through. We had a 15 minute lead on the next truck and we
have at least 15 minutes lead still. Very smooth, but extremely rough course,
we loved it. It was rainy and hot, a little of everything. We had to go slow
with the rain because we kept cleaning your visor. Tons of people there are all
along the road, everybody cheering us on.
CLASS 9
900 Eric Fisher
It was a good race. When I got started I had some problems with the
carburetor. At mile 10, I had to disassemble it and we lost 20 minutes. After
checkpoint 1 I had problems with the spark plugs so we changed them. We went on to mile
120 where we added fuel, Then, in Matomi we got a lot of rain. At Puertecito
the transmission was broken and we couldn’t shift from there to here, but
finally we won. Ramon Medina was my co-pilot the whole race. I never got rain
before and I think no one was prepared for it, but we had a good experience.
CLASS 10
1006 Adam Wik
We had a perfect day with no problems. My pit guys where well at the pit
stops always, they had a lot of work. I drove the whole race. My wife, Bekki is
expecting our first baby, it’s a girl. The course was very challenging, very
rough and the rain made it a little tough, but it was a big course. Tons of
people were at the start and finish area and over at Zoo road, really almost the
entire course had spectators which is amazing. But, then again, we have tons of
spectators at all the SCORE Baja races.
SCORE LITE
1216 Stan Potter
Co-rider: Dan Worley
Incredible race! In the first washes it was very wet, very tough. After that,
I think we won by at least 10 minutes. It was rough but in this car the
rougher, the better. Stan drove from the start to mile 130, I drove from 130 to
here. It iss incredible, the spectators know what’s going on, they’re everywhere
and they really cheer you on.
PROTRUCK
204 Gustavo Vidozda Jr.
We started on a good rhythm. At mile 50 we broke the right shock, we were
cautious not to cause a problem to anyone. The course was different when we
pre-ran it, all the vehicles practicing really chewed it up. The sand was very
loose. But arriving in first, you forget all the problems. We have done three
races this year and we have won all three of them.
204 Co-driver Bryan Freeman
I got in at mile 126. Halfway point there was a broken front shock, and we
had no spares. Gustavo drove in the other part. The rain was nice, we had the
hood up. The heat of the motor gets too hot, so the rain cooled us down. It doesn
’t rain often in the desert, so it made it different.
235 Jason Voss
I ran out of gas. I stopped and I came around right. There was a little rain,
a little mud, we had good time! My dad did not want to ride today. My
co-driver Johnny said that we had to show the man how it is done.
PRO MOTOCYCLES
CLASS 22
7x Robby Bell
We had a great performance. The suspension and motor worked excellent it was
a great race for this bike. Today I rode from mile 30 to 130 and the last 45
miles to the finish and my teammate Kendall Norman rode the rest. It was
raining for 65 miles, it was hard to see. Up to checkpoint 3 was the best, we tried
to survive all the rocks all the way to the finish. It was so much fun going
wide open. This new Honda CRF450X is an incredible racing machine and really
says a lot about the four-stroke engine.
4x Cameron Steele
Co-rider: Cole Gress
The race was fun, the course was very rocky, at the beginning a little bit of
problem but I got a good rhythm. Not much rain for the last 45 miles. I drove
200 to the finish. The rest, Cameron Steele did the first 11 miles, We had
several riders and Cameron’s brother, Grant, did mile 126 to 200 when I got on
it. Is the first race I ran, so it was good, but I know we can do better. Our
Suzuki ran really good.
CLASS 21
110x Keneth López
A very competitive race but everything turned out right for us. I drove mile
93 to 130 and from 16 to 40, Roberto Villalobos started and went to mile 55,
from there Ernesto Hernandez to mile 93, Chris from mile 130 to 196, Roberto to
216 and I did the end. I drove with a broken wrist for the last 20 miles but
I am here. There we a lot of spectators and the road was very bumpy.
CLASS 30
316x Ron Wilson
Fantastic race, it was pouring down rain from mile 30 to the lake. The first
120 miles and the last 40 miles, Scott Myers is my partner, he gave me a
little break and (Tony Russler). I passed 30 bikes off the start , they were buried
at the end of class 30 so I had to do a lot of work, no crashes. The motor
started to let go, the last 5 miles I couldn’t hold it wide open so that could
have cost us the win. We made it well.
303x Robert Laughlin
My race was beautiful, rain, wind, sun. I could never get my pace on the
road. I would go fast and then hit something, get back on, I broke a foot peg, and
I never knew what I hit. I drove solo race. The rain was challenging but we
also had a big rainbow to guide us. This was my first race in SCORE Pro Class
30. I won all three races riding solo last year in the Sportsman Motorcycle
over 250cc class last year. Our motorcycle competition is great in SCORE races,
especial here in San Felipe this year.
CLASS 40
402x Michael Laenger
The course was excellent, rain took the dust away and that really helped
because there were so many vehicles in the race. I drove mile 50 until 130, and
225 to the finish, the rest was Kim Curtys, I saw many spectators, I didn’t see
any booby traps, I am ready for next year.
PRO ATVs
CLASS 25
5a Wayne Matlock
It was a fun race. I drove from mile 30 to 126, somewhere around there, and
then from 222 to the finish line. My partner Chad Prull did the rest, just the
two of us. There was a lot of rain. I feel great and I am ready to do it
again.
SPORTSMAN
SPT CAR
1403 Tony McLaren
The course was great, it was very technical. It rained in the south, We didn’
t get any flats. I enjoyed it, there was quite a lot of people. Thanks SCORE,
it was a great day.
SPORT TRUCK
1504 Steven Looney
I’m tired. I was the second one to drive. I did from mile 130 to the finish.
The rain made it different, a little dry some places and slippery in the mud.
There were no problems, it was very fun.
1504 Co-driver Mike Ballard
I started, we switched at mile 130. The race was awesome, I love San Felipe.
It surprised me that there were so many spectators in the mountains with the
rain. I only saw one accident. And we will be back next year.
SPORT M/C
270x Scott Mapes
I did it by myself, as a solo rider. Nice course and I had a pretty good
race, in some areas there was rain.
