LAS
VEGAS, NV (July 5, 2005) -- Twenty of the top desert racers
from Southern Nevada, including five in the marquee
SCORE Trophy-Truck division, are all
hoping for some good ‘cards’ and
a hometown advantage when they visit the Dirt Track at Las Vegas Motor Speedway
this month for the SCORE Las Vegas Terrible’s Cup I, the newest event
in desert racing.
Being held on
a special man-made ‘chunk of Baja’ course
in and around the Dirt Track at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, the best of SCORE
desert
racing will
be in action July 29-30 in the glowing spotlight of the gaming, entertainment
and special events capital of the world.
The lineup is
set for the limited-field invitational to be held under the lights on a Friday
and Saturday night at
the world-class Dirt Track at LVMS. A total
of 94 of the best racers from the SCORE Desert Series have entered the new
racing extravaganza.
Las Vegas natives
Ed, Tim and Troy Herbst along with Rob MacCachren and Brian Collins lead
the group who are all hoping to entertain
their hometown fans
while etching their names deeper into the lore of Southern Nevada desert
racing history.
Among the local
group, Tim, 42, and Ed Herbst, 44, are the all-time winningest team in SCORE
Trophy-Truck history. Splitting the driving time in
their No.
19 Terrible Herbst Motorsports Ford F-150, Tim, 42, and Ed, 44, have 11 career
wins
in SCORE Trophy-Truck, and four of the 11 season championships (1999, 2000,
2002, 2003).
Troy Herbst, 39,
the youngest of the three Herbst brothers, is a dominating SCORE Class 1
racer, with six SCORE season point titles in his
class out of
the last
seven years, and 16 Class 1 race wins since 1997 in a Smithbuilt-Ford open
wheel desert race car.
“We may have a psychological edge in the open desert around Las Vegas,
but a hybrid, short-course stadium style event like this one is an entirely different
deal,” said Ed Herbst, president of the family-owned Herbst Gaming organization. “The
Herbst family has been working with SCORE and Las Vegas Events for several
years to put this new event together and it is exciting to see all the pieces
fall
into place.”
“As we all know, the desert around Las Vegas is shrinking and we must find
new venues and different types of events to help keep our treasured sport alive.
Personally, I think having this many local entries speaks volumes about how
much this special motorsport of desert racing means to all of us. Most of us
around
here grew up watching our dads race, we are carrying the torch now, and a new
generation of local desert racers is starting to blossom. The goal of the Herbst
family is to help ensure that our kids and our friends’ kids have a place
to race in their own backyard.”
MacCachren, 40,
a seven-time class season point champion in the SCORE Desert Series, is one
of only two drivers who entered
in three classes for his hometown
race. The Mac Attack will race in the marquee SCORE Trophy-Truck division,
Class 1-2/1600 and Class 10 in the inaugural event. He will drive the No.
4 Vildosola
Racing Ford F-150 in SCORE Trophy-Truck, the No. 1609 Freeman Racing Fraley-VW
in Class 1-2/1600 and the No. 1011 Paquette Racing Jimco-Honda in Class 10.
Cameron
Steele, an ESPN extreme sports announcer, has also entered three classes
in Las Vegas. Steele, San Clemente, Calif., will be racing in SCORE Trophy-Truck,
Class 1-2/1600 and in SCORE Lite.
Brian Collins,
42, is a second generation desert racer, following in his dad’s
tracks just like the Herbst brothers
and MacCachren. Collins, a Southern Nevada developer who recently opened a
new race shop
in Las Vegas, a state-of-the-art
25,000 square-feet
facility,
will drive the No. 12 Collins Motorsports Chevy Silverado in the marquee
SCORE Trophy-Truck division.
Collins Motorsports
preps four SCORE Trophy-Trucks and several open-wheel desert race cars and
three of the SCORE Trophy-Trucks will
be racing in Las Vegas.
Bobby
Baldwin, 54, President of the Bellagio resort in Las Vegas, and his son B.J.
Baldwin, 25, will both race in SCORE Trophy-Trucks prepped and crewed
by Collins Motorsports.
The elder Baldwin,
the 1987 winner of the popular World Series of Poker, will drive his new
No. 96 Baldwin Motorsports Chevy Silverado
while his son B.J.,
who was part of the same Durango HS graduating class (1997) as NASCAR champion
Kurt Busch, will drive the No. 97 Baldwin Motorsports Ford F-150.
Besides Troy
Herbst, the other veteran local desert racers in Class 1 are veteran SCORE
desert racers Pat Dean (Bunderson-Chevy), the team of B.J. Richardson/John
Gaughan (Bunderson Chevy) and Kory Scheeler (Porter-Chevy).
Class 1-2/1600
has the largest number of local entries with seven. Besides MacCachren are:
Cody
Freeman (Wink-VW), Don Wall (Suspensions Unlimited-VW),
Aaron Hawley
(Bunderson-VW), Sammy Ehrenberg (Jimco-VW), Fernie Padilla (Bunderson-VW)
and Henderson’s Ken Tapert (Porter-VW).
In addition to
MacCachren, locals in Class 10 are two-time SCORE Desert Series champion
Mark Hutchins of Henderson
(Kreger-Honda) and Brian Freemal (Jimco-Honda).
Henderson’s
John Copitas Jr. will drive a Ford Ranger in Class 7S.
Racing
will begin at 7 p.m. each night at LVMS and both nights will conclude with
colorful Terrible’s Fireworks Shows.
Nearly 90-percent
of the 1.5 mile course will be viewable from the grandstands in the 8,026-seat
facility.
Competing in their own race will be the marquee
SCORE Trophy-Trucks and the unlimited SCORE Class 1 open-wheel desert race
cars along
with special groups for open-wheelers in Class 1-2/1600 and Class 10/SCORE
Lite along with the mini-trucks of Class 7/Class 7S/Class 7SX.
The event offers
nearly $250,000 in cash and contingency postings. SCORE Trophy-Truck has
18 entries while Class 1 has 17 entries. Class 1-2/1600 has 23 entries,
the combined Class 10/SCORE Lite group has 21 and the combined Class 7/Class
7S/Class
7SX mini-truck group has 15 total entries.
The two groups
with multiple classes will have a handicapped start, to be determined during
practice at LVMS on
the first race day.
As a prelude to
the two days of racing, the SCORE Las Vegas Pit Stop at Fremont Street Experience
will be
held on Thursday, July 28. At the SCORE Pit Stop,
starting at 6 p.m., will be a vehicle display and the $10,000 Terrible’s
Pit Crew Challenge for SCORE Trophy-Trucks, meet the SCORE racers party for
all competing
SCORE racers and a special SCORE concert under the multi-million dollar canopy
on Fremont Street.
With co-title
sponsorship from Las Vegas Events and Terrible’s
Convenience Stores, the SCORE Las Vegas Terrible’s Cup I will feature
two nights of racing on the LVMS Dirt Track. Racing will be on a purpose-built
race track
with
limited pavement and man-made dirt simulations of the rugged desert terrain.
After 11-plus
years of rumbling around rugged desert race courses in the Southwestern U.S.
and Baja California, Mexico, SCORE Trophy-Trucks--the untamed 800-horsepower,
unlimited production trucks that are the featured racing division in the
SCORE
Desert Series--will make their short-course stadium racing debut in July
at LVMS.
The SCORE Las
Vegas Terrible’s Cup I will be televised nationally
on the Outdoor Life Network (OLN) by Aura 360, the company that co-produced
last
year’s
Tecate SCORE Baja 1000 for NBC.
For the Blue reserved
